This page is intended to be a resource hub for state regulators, legislators, and members of the public who are working to improve pipeline safety at the state level. Pipeline Safety Trust leads and supports several state-level pipeline safety initiatives and is committed to making safety information, tools, and policy guidance accessible and actionable. Here, you’ll find fact sheets, sample legislative language, and other resources designed to support effective pipeline safety policymaking and implementation.
As of 2024, state regulators were responsible for the safety oversight of 89% of all onshore and offshore pipelines in the United States, including 31% of hazardous liquid pipelines, 35% of gas transmission and gathering pipelines, and 100% of gas distribution pipelines. Why does pipeline oversight matter? Communities are impacted every year by preventable pipeline incidents. From 2010 to 2024, 133 people have lost their lives to pipeline failures.
